Şırnak University was established on May 31, 2008, in accordance with Additional Article 101 of Law No. 2809 on Higher Education Institutions. As of the end of 2018, it encompasses faculties such as Economics and Administrative Sciences, Theology, Engineering, Fine Arts, Tourism and Hotel Management, Physical Education and Sports, Graduate School of Education, and Şırnak Vocational School in the Şırnak city center. Additionally, it has vocational schools in Cizre and Silopi districts, as well as a Faculty of Agriculture and a Vocational School in İdil district. Although the Faculty of Health Sciences and Health Services Vocational School have been established, they are not currently providing educational services.
As of December 31, 2020, the university offered education in 20 undergraduate programs, 24 associate degree programs, and 16 graduate programs across 14 academic units. The student population by the end of 2020 consisted of 1,666 associate degree students, 241 vocational school students, 1,508 undergraduate students, and 613 graduate students, totaling 4,028 students. The university employs a total of 649 personnel, including 306 academic staff, 221 administrative staff, and 112 permanent workers.
